Dragon's Eye (Natural Phenomenon & Lake)

A geomorphological phenomenon along the Rogoznica coast

The Rogoznica lake, known locally as the Dragon's Eye, is a unique natural phenomenon situated near the open sea. Although it is not directly connected to the surrounding sea on the surface, it is linked through cracks and channels in the porous limestone, as well as a cave known as the Dragon's Ear.

The lake consists of several layers of water with different properties and colors. On the surface, you can see shades of green and blue, while deeper layers display tones of yellow, green, pink, red, and purple. At certain times, the water layers mix, creating a phenomenon known as the "boiling" of the lake.

This natural process is linked to changes in oxygen levels and sulfur concentrations in the deeper layers. When conditions in the lake change, the marine life temporarily retreats to the surrounding sea, and once the water stabilizes, the lake becomes rich with life once again.

Beyond its scientific explanation, the Dragon's Eye is surrounded by numerous legends. The most famous story tells of the dragon Murin, while another tradition links the lake's elliptical shape to a meteorite impact. It is this blend of natural uniqueness and mysterious tales that makes the Dragon's Eye a must-visit spot for anyone in Rogoznica.

Visiting the Dragon's Eye offers the chance to experience a unique landscape, learn about unusual natural processes, and enjoy the tranquility of the Mediterranean Gradina peninsula.
