Spomenik prirode Stara straža (Geological Nature Monument)

A geological natural monument featuring visible folds and layers of the Earth's crust

Stara Straža has been protected as a geological natural monument since 1961 and covers an area of 1.17 hectares. The site is located approximately four kilometers northwest of Knin, along the state road to Gračac, and is easily recognizable due to its striking natural rock profile.

The greatest value of Stara Straža lies in its clearly visible folds—undulating layers of the Earth's crust formed by lateral pressure and the shifting of rock masses. The profile features alternating layers of limestone and dolomite from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, along with marly limestone and chert. Of particular interest is the fossil coral of the genus Cladocoropsis, visible in the Malmian rock layers.

The site is important for paleontology, mineralogy, petrography, and sedimentology, while also serving as a valuable space for learning about geological processes. Its rock formations display fundamental structural elements such as stratification, folds, and faults, making Stara Straža an interesting destination for nature lovers, geology enthusiasts, and educational field trips.

Visiting Stara Straža offers a direct encounter with the geological heritage of the Knin area and serves as a reminder of how much the natural landscape can reveal about the distant past. When visiting, it is important to protect the site and avoid damaging its sensitive rock layers.
