Šarena jezera (Lakes)

Mysterious color-changing lakes near Knin

The Colorful Lakes are located east of Knin, in the northeastern part of Kosovo Polje, near the road to Split and the Krka River. The site consists of three larger lakes and two smaller karst springs in an area known as Burum, where the Kosovčica and Krka rivers meet.

They get their name from the natural phenomenon that causes their surface to take on different shades throughout the day. Depending on the position of the sun, the water reflects the sky, clouds, and surrounding greenery, with the scenes being particularly impressive in the early morning and late afternoon hours.

The banks offer views toward Knin, the Knin Fortress, and Spas Hill, while the surrounding landscape provides a sense of peace and seclusion. Once a favorite swimming spot for Knin residents, the Colorful Lakes are now a draw for hikers, photographers, fishing enthusiasts, and anyone looking to discover the lesser-known natural beauty of the Šibenik-Knin hinterland.

A visit to the Colorful Lakes can be combined with a tour of the nearby Burum Lakes, Krka National Park, and the archaeological sites in the Biskupija area. Due to the natural and undeveloped banks, cautious movement and appropriate footwear are recommended to ensure a safe and responsible experience of this valuable area.
