Baljenac is located approximately 1.5 kilometers west of Kaprije and covers only about 0.14 square kilometers. Despite its small size, the island is crisscrossed by a network of dry-stone walls stretching about 23 kilometers. An aerial view reveals a pattern resembling the papillary lines of a human fingerprint, which is why Baljenac has earned the nickname "Fingerprint Island."

The dry-stone walls were built during the 19th century by the inhabitants of nearby Kaprije to cultivate the sparse karst soil. These stone fences were used to create and preserve arable land, protect grapevines and fig trees from the wind, prevent erosion, and mark plot boundaries. They were built without any binding material, stone by stone, in harmony with nature and the needs of island life.

Today, Baljenac is uninhabited and lacks maintained paths or docks, but it is precisely this untouched state that contributes to its unique character. The islet is most often viewed from the sea or the air and is particularly interesting to sailors, photographers, and lovers of cultural landscapes.

Baljenac is not just a natural attraction but also a valuable record of the traditional way of life on the Šibenik islands. Its dry-stone walls are part of the dry-stone construction tradition, which was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018. Visiting and exploring the island requires respect for the space and care for its fragile natural and cultural heritage.
