Had Barone Fortress not been built in 1646 alongside St. John's Fortress, Šibenik would have fallen under cannon fire in a single day, as its high walls—built in an era of cold steel—could not have withstood cannonballs.

This "younger sister" to St. John's Fortress was built on a 90-meter-high hill once known as Vidakuša, named after the small church of St. Vitus. It was constructed at the initiative of Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, a German baron in the Venetian service, from whom it took its name. Like St. John's Fortress, it was completed in just 58 days, built entirely by the citizens of Šibenik with their own hands and resources, without any outside help. Both fortresses proved their defensive capabilities in the fateful year of 1647, when they successfully withstood a month-long Ottoman siege by tens of thousands of soldiers.

Barone Fortress

The fortress features the Barone shop with a rich and curated selection of souvenirs, a children's playground, and a café bar with arguably the best view in the city. The café bar is open year-round. Summer brings jazz and a rich film program, thanks to the Barone Jazz Festival and the Barone Summer Cinema.

Barone Bar

A ticket to Barone Fortress includes admission to St. John's Fortress, and vice versa. However, the best value is the combined ticket for all three of Šibenik's land fortresses, allowing you to explore the city's fortification route. Opening hours vary by season, so we highly recommend checking the official Fortress of Culture website. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility is provided to almost all levels of the fortress.
