It is named after the 15th-century Church of St. Martin, the patron saint of winemakers. The beach is a protected park and part of a UNESCO buffer zone. Martinska is a city beach located on a peninsula across from the old town, connected by a circular boat line during the summer months. This is the peninsula that inspired Caribbean poet Aimé Césaire to write his masterpiece, "Notebook of a Return to the Native Land."
