In the past, it was the main shopping destination, home to various shops and artisan workshops, and in the afternoons and evenings, it became a favorite promenade. It was so popular that a hundred years ago, walking on Kalelarga had to be regulated by a special decree to avoid crowds. Today, it still houses shops with traditional crafts and characteristic Šibenik souvenirs. If you continue to the end of Kalelarga, walking along its stone slabs, you will arrive exactly at the Cathedral of St. James, a UNESCO-listed stone beauty.

If, however, you turned right at the intersection into Zagrebačka Street, you stepped into a street that local Šibenik residents proudly call Masna (Greasy). It is an essential part of the story of Šibenik's food and wine heritage, as it was once teeming with inns, taverns, and taverns that offered simple, traditional food. This is where workers and the common folk would usually come for mid-morning meals, though the gentry were not averse to it either. Because of the intense steam and grease released by the taverns' kitchens, the street earned its greasy nickname. Some accounts even mention fat dripping onto the floor from freshly roasted lambs propped against the tavern walls to entice the hungry. Today, its stone slabs still shine, but not from grease—rather from the footsteps of those who walk upon them.

Masna is lively all year round, as it is one of the favorite spots for locals to enjoy their coffee. If you turn into the side streets surrounding it, you will catch the scent of places where locals eat the same kind of traditional lunches that were once served in Masna. Where Masna ends, the climb toward Gorica begins—the steepest part of the old town—and a maze of narrow streets will lead you to its highest point, St. Michael's Fortress.
Regardless of whether you choose Kalelarga or Masna (King Tomislav Street or Zagreb Street) at the crossroads, you won't go wrong, as both are imbued with an irresistible Mediterranean charm and are visually captivating, filled with architectural details. In the end, you'll likely explore both!
