Movie Night at Arsen
Is there a worse time for a divorce? Marija, a successful businesswoman from Vilnius, finally tells her husband Vytas what she has been holding inside for years. The next morning, Russia invades Ukraine, and their private war is suddenly being fought in the shadow of a real one.
Lithuania's Oscar entry and winner of the directing award at Sundance doesn't focus on battles or heroes, but on what remains when history comes knocking: grocery shopping, taking a child to school, arguments in the car, and the question of whether personal problems can wait while the world falls apart. From this absurdity, Blaževičius draws a dry, almost imperceptible humor, which led Roger Ebert to describe the film as "an often bitingly funny story about people muddling through private disasters in the shadow of a global one."
The film holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Marija is played by Žygimantė Elena Jakštaitė, Vytas by Marius Repšys, and their daughter by Dovile Amelija Adomaitytė.
