Spring in Šibenik

Šibenik, a Mediterranean city with a rich history, was first mentioned on Christmas Day in 1066 in a charter by King Petar Krešimir IV. Known affectionately as the "City of Krešimir," it reveals historical tales woven through its streets, fortresses, and monuments.

The old town is filled with significant monuments, and Šibenik is one of only five cities in the world to boast two UNESCO World Heritage sites, placing it alongside London, Berlin, Beijing, and New Delhi. The Cathedral of St. James was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000 and is the most significant monument in the historic city center.

When walking through Šibenik, locals will always recommend visiting the three land fortresses – St. Michael’s, St. John’s, and Barone are ideal locations for panoramic views of the entire city and for photos you’ll want to show your loved ones.

Šibenik reveals historical stories written through its streets, fortresses, and monuments, and spring is the perfect time to embark on a new adventure and explore the city and its surroundings. There is an abundance of activities for those who want to make the most of their vacation, and the longer days, plenty of sunshine, and rising temperatures are the best invitation to discover this little paradise.

St. Anthony’s Channel protects Šibenik from large waves and the open sea, and together with St. Nicholas’ Fortress, it forms a unique "sea gate" at the entrance to the city. If you are a lover of nature, the scent of the sea, and pine trees, go cycling or running surrounded by beautiful nature in St. Anthony’s Channel or along its promenade.

St. Anthony’s Channel is about 2.5 kilometers long and is characterized by Aleppo pine and holm oak forests. A promenade stretches along the channel, connecting the area from Paninkovac Bay to the small island of Školjić in front of St. Nicholas’ Fortress. It takes about two hours to walk the promenade in one direction, and it is a favorite destination for both locals and tourists.

At Jadrija, a century-old city beach, surfers have also found their place in the sun at the Mali Viganj surf school. This is a great opportunity for all those who are adrenaline junkies or would like to try something new.

The area around Šibenik is truly most special in the spring, when the almond trees bloom and follow your every step. Every lover of nature and active vacations simply must stop at Krka National Park. Wooded and karst-filled, the Krka River is the most valuable ornithological area in Europe and home to numerous endemic animal species, and with every new step, you will discover something new. From the magnificent Skradinski Buk, you can take a boat trip to the island of Visovac, or to Roški Slap or Torak. Since 1445, Visovac has been home to the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac, and in the surroundings of Visovac Lake, you can truly nourish both your soul and body.

Beneath the Svilaja mountain and through Petrovo Polje flows the Čikola River, which is particularly attractive due to its canyon and a zipline with what we believe is the greenest view. Dozens of meters above the ground, you zip along at 70 kilometers per hour, enjoying the view of the Čikola River canyon on a 1.4-kilometer-long course. Accompanied by experienced guides and lots of positive energy, fun is guaranteed, as is a special experience you will be talking about for years.

Take your bike out of the garage and head out on one of the county's many cycling routes. On the Bike & Hike website, you will find routes for all types of terrain and all styles of riding. Whether you are a professional cyclist or a recreational rider, the area of Šibenik and its surroundings is ideal for two-wheeled adventures. Pedaling and enjoying the beautiful trails, landscapes, and nature is an adventure not to be missed.

The Šibenik archipelago tells a special story, and every local will recommend a trip to Žirje, Kaprije, Krapanj, Zlarin, Prvić, or the Kornati islands. The island of Krapanj is the lowest and smallest inhabited island in the Adriatic, nurturing a centuries-old tradition of diving, sponge harvesting, and fishing. Zlarin, better known as the island of coral, is a true jewel of the Šibenik archipelago. You can explore it by kayak or via bike & hike trails. On Prvić, a fantastic memorial center awaits you, dedicated to the widely known Šibenik great and inventor Faust Vrančić. A stone labyrinth of eighty-nine islands, islets, and reefs in the sea – just a small part of what the Kornati National Park offers, which you must visit if you are a lover of wild nature.

The scent of the sea, the sun on your face, and the numerous activities the city and its surroundings offer are the best invitation for spring in Šibenik.
