In the heart of Dalmatia, where the Krka River meets the sea, lies a true gastronomic treasure – Šibenik mussels. These triangular black shellfish, also known as dagnje or mušule, have been a prized gift of nature for centuries, and their exceptional taste and quality make them an essential part of the local culinary tradition. Discover why mussels from the waters of Šibenik are among the most delicious in the Adriatic and how they are farmed in this unique environment.
The Šibenik region takes pride in its mussels, which are synonymous with the freshness and authentic taste of the Adriatic. You may call them dagnje, mušule, or pizdice, but in Šibenik, they are known exclusively as pidoće, highlighting their local significance and distinct identity. Their exceptional quality is no accident; it is the result of the unique natural environment in which they grow.
Mussels in the Šibenik waters, from the submerged mouth of the Krka River all the way to Skradin, grow wild. Their colonies along the coast are located in positions that protect them from strong waves. A key factor in their remarkable growth is the so-called brackish water, an area where seawater and river water mix. This sweet-and-salty combination provides ideal conditions for the development of mussels, enriching them with a special flavor and texture.
The Krka River plays a crucial role in the quality of Šibenik mussels. Due to the influence of the Krka and the phytoplankton that the mussels feed on, especially in the area around the Šibenik bridge, the shellfish grow exceptionally fast and are rich in meat. Although mussels are saltwater shellfish and would perish in fresh water, the nutrients brought by the river as it flows through the karst, limestone landscape significantly influence their growth and overall quality.

The mussel is a seasonal shellfish, most commonly consumed from spring to autumn, depending on sea temperature and the amount of fresh water flowing from the Krka. Today, the mussel has become an important mariculture product. About a dozen local farmers cultivate them in the area where the Krka mixes with the sea, stretching from Prukljan Lake to the Šibenik Channel. The farming cycle is a fascinating process that requires careful monitoring and care, from setting up nets in the sea to harvesting the mature shellfish. Local farmers are dedicated to ensuring optimal conditions for healthy and rapid growth, monitoring temperatures daily and adapting farming methods to natural challenges.
Mussels can rightfully be called a "superfood." Although generally low in fat, they are a valuable source of precious omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which benefit heart and vascular health, cognitive function, and protect against chronic inflammatory diseases. They are also a rich source of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C. No other food contains as much vitamin B12, selenium, and manganese. The quality of the water where the mussels are farmed is constantly monitored and certified as "Zone A" purity, which guarantees the safety and premium quality of the product.

The mussel consists of two identical, elongated shells, tightly connected by an elastic ligament, measuring 6-8 cm in length. Inside is the soft tissue. The shell is fan-shaped, blackish-blue on the outside, and pale pearlescent on the inside. They live mainly on rocks along the coast and feed on small plankton.
