Long before brunch was invented, there was the marenda – long before organic, seasonal, and local became a trend, these were the very qualities that defined the hearty, substantial meals of Šibenik’s workers, fishermen, farmers, and gentlemen alike, a tradition that has remained on our plates to this day.
In the taverns and inns of the legendary Masna Street, there was something for everyone – from a couple of handfuls of fried small fish, to fish stew, jota, barley and beans, pork knuckle, and roasted lamb – every dish had its loyal following.

Šibenik cuisine is, like in other parts of Dalmatia, a blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian influences, but the ingredients – they always come from our own region. It is a fusion of island, hinterland , and urban produce, and when we say urban, we refer to the fields surrounding Šibenik, which is, at its core, a deeply agrarian city.

Right in the heart of Šibenik, there are spots where you can eat like a local – check out our guide to find these places and treat yourself to a hearty, traditional worker's brunch that will keep you full for hours while you explore the city or head out on excursions to the surrounding area.
