Why visit
views of the Krka canyon and the Nečven fortress located directly opposite
Perched on a high cliff on the right bank of the Krka River, the remains of Trošenj Fortress stand proudly—a former stone sentinel that once guarded a vital river crossing.

Situated on the edge of the deep Krka River canyon, Trošenj Fortress played a key role in controlling the river crossing. It was erected in the 14th century by the powerful Šubić noble family to secure control over the bridge that once connected the two banks. Interestingly, Trošenj sits at almost the same elevation as the neighboring Nečven Fortress on the opposite side of the river, with which it formed a unified defensive system for this part of the Krka region.

Trošenj Fortress

The fortress architecture is adapted to the rugged terrain, giving it an irregular yet functional shape. The central part of the complex features a circular tower with a diameter of about five meters, its massive walls bearing witness to its former strength and importance. Adjacent to it, one can see the remains of residential quarters and a rectangular tower with distinctive semicircular openings. Although the fortress was abandoned and left to the ravages of time after the departure of the Ottomans in the 17th century, its stone remains still clearly outline its former splendor and military power.

Trošenj Fortress

A visit to Trošenj offers an insight into the authentic atmosphere of the medieval fortifications that once graced the canyon edges. From its walls, there is a direct view of the deep Krka River gorge and the neighboring Nečven, creating a vista that captures the historical importance of this location. The surroundings are peaceful and well-preserved, allowing visitors to explore the tower ruins in silence and imagine life as it once was within these walls. The location is ideal for those looking to explore the lesser-known parts of Krka National Park and experience a blend of historical heritage and natural surroundings.

Today, the fortress is accessible via a hiking trail leading from the direction of Kistanje, through the village of Čučevo. Although the bridge below the fortress no longer exists, Trošenj continues to dominate the landscape as a recognizable symbol of medieval power. Its state of preservation, despite centuries of abandonment, makes it an essential stop for history enthusiasts who wish to experience the authentic spirit of the old fortresses on the Krka.
