The Danilo field, where the village of Danilo is located, today appears as a peaceful place with fields, hills, and fresh air. What surprises visitors is what lies beneath the surface—two thousand years ago, a real city existed here, known in Roman times as municipium Riditarum, one of the more significant centers in the hinterland located on the road to the military camp of Burnum.
The history of the village reaches even further back into the past. In the Danilo field, just a few hundred meters from the Roman site, a Neolithic settlement about 6,000 years old was found, one of the most important New Stone Age sites in Croatia. In the 4th century BC, the area was inhabited by members of the Illyrian tribe of the Dalmatae, who established the settlement of Rider here.
Archaeological finds in this area continue to be discovered in recent times. According to archaeologists from the Šibenik City Museum, remains of a Roman temple were found beneath the current church, and sites such as Gradina and Stari Šematorij are part of a broader archaeological guide to this region.
